What's an Omniglot?

You've probably heard of a polyglot (a speaker of many languages), but what's an omniglot? A speaker of all languages! Our mission is to bring as many languages as possible to as many learners as possible, matching eager students with local teachers. We want to celebrate the linguistic diversity of the Ocean State and create a community of language lovers. Sign up here to receive updates as we continue to grow our project and add new languages and classes!

Our Classes: Fall 2025

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our little school's first year! In just 9 months, we've taught classes in 7 languages to over 100 students with the help of 10 teachers and 3 interns. We're working hard to figure out schedules and staffing for the fall, and we plan to open registration sometime in mid-July. In the meantime, you can browse our classes below!

Spanish Classes for Kids

*Fall registration opens in mid-July.*

Omniglots Tots!

Ages 2–4 years with an adult — Fridays, 5:15–5:45 p.m.

This lively class will expose little ones to the Spanish language through stories, songs, nursery rhymes, and games. Parents will also benefit from the opportunity to engage with each other in Spanish, learn new vocabulary, and ask questions about the language. Although languages can be learned at any age, early exposure helps children distinguish and differentiate sounds, setting them up for success later on. This engaging class will introduce your child to the sounds of Spanish!

Spanish Playtime for Little Kids

Grades K & 1 — Group 1: Tuesdays & Fridays, 4:00–4:30 p.m. / Group 2: Tuesdays & Fridays, 4:30–5:00 p.m.

This class is designed for young learners who want a joyful introduction to Spanish. Students will explore the language through art projects, picture books, songs, pretend play, nature exploration and more! Classes meet for 30 minutes twice a week and are limited to 4 students. (Note: Students must be attending Kindergarten or first grade in fall 2025 to take this class. Children who are not yet in school should sign up for our toddler/parent classes.)

Spanish Immersion Activities

Grades K through 5 — Thursdays, 4:00–5:00 p.m.

This fun and relaxed class is an opportunity for children who already speak and/or understand Spanish to play and interact with others in an immersion environment. We will do art projects, perform plays, play games, take nature walks, and more. Students will be encouraged to use Spanish as much as possible while teachers help model the language and enrich their vocabulary. This class will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Students do not have to be fluent, but some experience with Spanish is required. This class is not appropriate for complete beginners.

Introductory Workshops

Grades 2 & 3 — Tuesdays, 10:00–11:00 a.m. / Wednesdays, 4:00–5:00 p.m.

This series of 6-week thematic workshops is designed for children with little or no experience with Spanish. Each project-based workshop will reinforce basic grammar and skills (counting, alphabet, the verbs "to be" and "to have," etc.) within a different context and with distinct vocabulary. Children can try one workshop or take them all! Workshops meet once a week on Wednesday afternoons or Tuesday mornings (for homeschoolers).
2025–2026 Workshops: Día de Muertos (body parts, family)• Dragones y tacos (food, verbs)• ¿Quién ganará? / Who Would Win? (animals, adjectives) • Legoland (places, prepositions) • La naturaleza (seasons, weather)

Our Teachers

Laura Healy started Omniglots because she wanted a place for Barrington kids (including her own!) to learn languages. She has a master's degree in romance languages and literatures from Harvard, and she teaches in the writing program at the Harvard Extension School. As an undergraduate at Brown, Laura studied translation, and she translates poetry and children's books from Spanish into English. Before the pandemic, she and her family spent three years in Germany, where she learned about European language pedagogy and different approaches to raising multilingual children.

Amrita

Amrita Adak recently graduated from UMass Amherst with a degree in Neurobiology, Language, and Trauma and a minor in Education. She grew up in a trilingual home, where from an early age she was nurtured with a deep love for languages, linguistic reflection, and cross-cultural appreciation. Having moved between countries many times, she understands both the joys and confusions that can come with navigating different cultural customs and languages. Amrita has experience teaching ESL, Hindi, and Korean to students of all ages. During her free time, she likes to crochet sweater vests for her friends and their pets.

Sofia

Sofia Checchi is pursuing a B.A. in Education Studies and Linguistics at Brown University. Her passion for multilingual education stems from her diverse linguistic upbringing. Growing up in a multilingual home in Los Angeles, she spoke Italian with her mother, English with her father, and Spanish with her friends and community. To further expand her linguistic repertoire, she has been studying Portuguese at Brown for the past two years. Sofia is dedicated to helping others develop their language skills and has experience as an ESL teaching assistant in both private and public school settings. Outside of academics, she is an active member of the Brown University cheerleading team.

Julia

Julia Terra-Salomão recently graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in education studies and Portuguese & Brazilian studies. She grew up in central Massachusetts in a Portuguese household, and her passion for language learning blossomed through her experience learning Portuguese as a heritage speaker. After learning ASL at college and becoming a teaching assistant, Julia knew she wanted to help share this love of languages with others! In her free time, she loves to crochet, make art, and read. She’s very excited for a fun year of language learning!

Hana

Jennifer Sousa has over 20 years of experience teaching ESL and Spanish to both children and adults. She currently teaches Spanish at Providence Country Day School, and she previously worked as a public school teacher for over 17 years in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Illinois. She has also taught international students at Roger Williams University and CCRI. Jenn received a Master's in Applied Linguistics from UMASS Boston and has published articles reflecting the experiences of her teaching journey and being a first-generation American. She currently possesses teaching certifications for Spanish and ESL in RI and MA.

Hana

Hana Butler Gutiérrez is a recent graduate in mechanical engineering from Brown University. Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, she was raised in a bilingual home, speaking English with her father and Spanish with her mother. She began learning French at age of six and spent a year abroad in France during high school. In addition to her love for languages, she enjoys staying active and creating sculptures. Hana is thrilled to have the opportunity to speak her mother language and share her firsthand experience with students in our Spanish classes.

Our Philosophy: Three Keys to Language Learning

Motivation

We encourage our students to always keep in mind why they are studying a language, and we strive to keep our classes fun and meaningful so that the class itself becomes something to look forward to.

Exposure

Learning a language is not something that happens overnight; it requires repeated exposure over time. We take every opportunity to expose our students to the languages they're studying, both inside and outside of class.

Application

We are always looking for ways for our students to apply the language they've learned in ways that are meaningful to them. Getting students to a point where they can use the language — watching a foreign film, interpreting for a neighbor, writing a love letter — is our ultimate goal.
